The History Behind the Ford XW Falcon GT-HO Phase II

Introduced in 1970, the Ford XW Falcon GT-HO Phase II was developed specifically to dominate Australia's toughest endurance races, including the famous Bathurst 500. Built by Ford's Special Vehicles team, the GT-HO (Handling Option) package featured numerous improvements over the standard Falcon GT, including revised suspension, upgraded braking, improved durability and the legendary 351 cubic-inch Cleveland V8.

Although officially rated at 300 horsepower for insurance purposes, the engine was widely regarded as producing significantly more. Combined with its close-ratio four-speed manual gearbox, heavy-duty differential and competition-focused engineering, the Phase II quickly established itself as one of the fastest four-door production sedans in the world during its era.

The XW GT-HO Phase II cemented its place in Australian motoring history when Allan Moffat drove one to victory at the 1970 Hardie-Ferodo 500 at Bathurst. That success reinforced the GT-HO's reputation for speed, reliability and endurance, helping create the legend that still surrounds the model today.
